Technician Training & Course Schedule

Technician Training

Scuba Equipment Service Technicians are the industry's "unsung heroes". As scuba gear essentially allows divers to breathe underwater, the people providing equipment support in the background rarely get the credits they deserve. Here at Scuba Clinic, we see the importance of the role technicians play and are working to fulfil this gap. Our focus is to raise awareness by providing "standardised" education and training in our state-of-the-art facility for those wishing to get into the engineering side of the industry.

We can offer these courses as a "package" as the main advantage of such integration will benefit dive masters and instructors in their personal development and improve employment opportunities. We believe it will as well benefit dive store owners as they will be able to rely on an all-round solid background to run their operations and to service/maintain and operate their equipment. Ultimately it will benefit divers' safety and the community as a whole.

Why Scuba Clinic?

State-of-the-art Facility
Our training facility has been designed for the primary purpose of training. Our workshops are clearly designated for each purpose and can accommodate the maximum of 6 students. Our classroom is spacious and comfortable, with an impressive library collection where students have full access to.

Dedication to Service and Repair
At Scuba Clinic, our only business focus is scuba equipment service and repair. Students can take advantage of training and working in a real and professional workshop environment without any day-to-day disruption of a normal dive centre operation. We take great pride in what we do and genuinely hope to influence our students' attitude towards quality servicing as well.

Wide Range of General and Special Tools
Our workshop contains multiple sets of general and special tools to do proper service work. Students will get to learn and work in a real and professional environment using the industry's most advanced technology.

Courses are exclusive to Scuba Clinic
We are one of not many centres in the world who are dedicated to offer Scuba Technician courses. Our highlight course "Regulator Service and Repair Technician Training Course" has been exclusively developed for and offered at Scuba Clinic.

About TQS

Technician’s Qualification Scheme (TQS) is an Australian qualification system introduced by Steve Robinson. TQS aims to certify the good technicians and give the aspiring ones that want to get into the industry a pathway of learning the principals first, gain manufacturers’ endorsements and then gain experience to be good at their job. Therefore the training is split into different levels.TQS

After all technicians works on life support equipment and when you are sitting at 40 meters it is not how much you paid for the service it is how good it was serviced. The quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten and this is what TQS would like to emphasise and to set apart professional and serious technicians from backyard practices.

Although TQS is not a government requirement in Australia, it is designed to give technician’s full credibility and qualification to work on life support equipment. This will as well protect and limit the Technician’s liability in an unlikely event of a legal dispute in court. Most wholesalers in Australia recognise the TQS system.

TQS believes in having only the serious technicians in their system and this is definitely not an "every player wins a prize" organisation. Customers will be able to to look at our verification of technicians and have confidence in the technicians’ ability.

Qualification Structure

The scuba technician’s qualification system has been designed to provide appropriate training for new technicians and verify the skills of current technicians which consist of Level I, II and III.

Level One Scuba Technician

This the formal entry point for a person wanting to become a recognised skilled scuba technician.

The candidate must attend a TQS sanctioned training course.

To gain a level one qualification the candidate must show a high level of competency in the following;

  • A clear understanding of the working principles of the scuba equipment.
  • Be able to follow manufacturer’s manuals.
  • Know how to use standard reporting and quality control forms.
  • Comply with standard servicing techniques.
  • Show practical mechanical ability.

Level One Theory Examination

There will be a written examination at the end of the course based on the level one technician’s manual and other material presented during the course.

An examination result of at least 75% must be achieved to pass. If the results are below 75% then the candidate can sit another paper when their knowledge has increased to the required level.

Level One Practical Assessment

During the course the instructor will make an assessment of practical skills and will record the result in the TQS student file.

Please be warned that as a level one technician you will be working on life support equipment. So the only way to gain that qualification is to achieve the required skills not just paying the course fee.

Manufacturer’s Endorsements

On completion of a level one scuba technician’s course candidates will need to gain manufacturer’s endorsements for the brands they wish to work on.

No TQS technician can work on any brand of scuba equipment without endorsement or consent of the manufacturer or manufacturer’s representative.

It is the responsibility of level one candidate to gain the endorsements they require from the specific manufacturer or their representatives.

Be aware that some manufacturer’s endorsements have a time limit so the endorsement for that brand will show an expiry date on your TQS qualification card. Technicians must do on going manufacturer’s updates and training to stay current for those brands.

Having a card with current endorsements is so important because we anticipate clients wanting service work done will want proof of technicians being qualified and able to work on their specific brand of equipment.

Divers will be invited to call TQS to verify the technician’s qualifications.

Level one technician certification is a probationary qualification.
It can be cancelled by TQS if complaints about servicing quality are not rectified or serious breaches of ethics or standards are proven.

Level Two Scuba Technician

A level two qualification is an open technician’s qualification. This qualification can be applied for from TQS once a technician has done fifty regulator services.

TQS requires proof of that work by submitting copies of those service sheets. Once TQS has confirmed the services by phoning a sample of the clients all work sheets will be returned to the technician. TQS will then issue a Level Two certification card and register details on their database.

Continual breaches of service quality and standards can also result in cancellation of qualification. Consultation with technician will always occur if any complaints are received. All efforts to resolve the complaints will be followed before any action is taken to cancel qualifications.

Level Three Scuba Technician

A level three qualification is an instructor certification to run level one courses.

Level three applications would be considered with the following requirements.

  • The candidate must have worked for at least two years as a full time level two technician.
  • Must have superior knowledge in equipment servicing.
  • Must have a number of manufacturers instructor endorsements.
  • Be able to give acceptable theory and practical presentations within TQS standards.
